Each day in America, 76 children die before their first birthday. An American child is born without health insurance every 51 seconds; 1,707 children a day, and 90 percent of our more than nine million uninsured children live in working families. We are not talking about third world countries; we are talking about American Children. This is unacceptable - in America every child should have health insurance. Stephanie Starks HOPE Foundation (SSHF), with the help of the Children’s Defense Fund, Healthy Families and 100% Campaign, will ensure that as many children as possible will receive health insurance.

Why is health insurance important?

Even If Your Child Is Healthy, Preventive Care Is Important.

Kids need health insurance to:

  • See a doctor to stop an illness before it becomes serious.
  • Be more ready to learn in school and participate in school sports.
  • Get the regular medical and dental check-ups they need in order to grow into strong and healthy adults.

Did You Know?

Health Insurance Is Available for Your Child at Little or No Cost
California has several programs including HEALTHY FAMILIES and MEDI-CAL that provide health coverage for children in working families. If you are not a California residence and would like to know what programs are available in your State please fill our Project Give HOPE for Health Form and include your state.

Healthy Families

Healthy Families provides low-cost health insurance for families with incomes to high to qualify for Medi-Cal and without access to private insurance.

Medi-Cal

Medi-Cal for Children provides no-cost health insurance for families with low incomes.

What Are The Benefits?

  • Both programs offer extensive medical, dental and vision coverage. Including hospitalizations, doctor’s visits, teeth cleanings and eyeglasses.
  • Using health care, other than long term care, will not make you a public charge, will generally not affect your chances of getting a green card and will not affect your application for citizenship.
  • Healthy Families and in many cases Medi-Cal offer a choice of private health plan providers.

What Is The Cost?

  • Medi-Cal is mainly no cost (some preventive services require a $5 co-payment).
  • Healthy Families can cost between $4 - $9 per child per month (with a maximum cost of $27), depending on family size, income and the health plan you choose.

Who Is Eligible?

Recent program changes have made even more children eligible for these programs. Even if your children were denied coverage in the past, they may now be eligible.

  • Children up to age 19.
  • Many working families qualify depending on family size and income. (You can own a house or car and still may qualify.) For example, a family of 4 making up to $47, 125 a year may be eligible.
  • Children who are U.S. citizens or qualified immigrants, including legal permanent residents, are eligible. Even if you are not a legal resident, your child may still qualify.

What If My Child Does Not Qualify For Medi-Cal Or Healthy Families?

If you child does not quality for Medi-Cal or Healthy Families because your income is too high or because of your child’s immigration status, he or she may be eligible for other programs. To learn more please complete and submit our Parent Awareness Form and select the appropriate boxes that related to your request.

How Do I Apply?

You can apply for both programs using one short mail-in application form!
